Why are my peas a different colour?
Recently you may have noticed a difference in the colour of our uncooked peas. We would like to make you aware that in 2008 we significantly reduced the amount of artificial colourings used in our Cook & Serve range of products and have now removed them totally from the majority of our products. This enables us to offer our customers a healthier product that appeals to a wider consumer market.
In some research the colourants we have used in our products have been linked to heath issues, especially in Children. E133 (brilliant blue) although legal in the UK , is banned in many European countries. E102 (tartrazine) has been linked with hyperactivity in children along with other health issues. As a company we have decided that removal of these colours was Vital in the interests of our customer.
We appreciate that consumers associate mushy peas with being bright green in appearance and that if this is not the case, then the other qualities i.e. taste, can be affected. We can confirm that under no circumstances would this be the case and that the quality of taste or how the peas would cook up would not be affected. Once the peas have been cooked accordingly, we would expect them to have blended with the greener peas in the packet and have appeared to give a pale green finished product with the same great taste and texture as shown below.
If you would prefer your mushy peas to have a deeper green colour just add a drop of green food colouring while you are cooking them.
